Yes,Halloween today is not what it might have been originally. But I'll tell you the same thing I tell to all these German church or carnival ppl who bitch every year in fear for their traditions: Let a big fancy-dress ball be a big fancy-dress ball and that's it.
And the "profit and sales" thing: I also think it's bad if the knowledge about the real backgrounds of holidays is ignored because of that. But Halloween is not the only such case.

If a big fancy-dress ball should be a big fancy-dress ball then don't take advantage of the ancient "hollidays". It's fine for me if people want to have a party, but they have to find their own reason and not transform something serious into a load of bullshit. And it seems to me that nowadays people NEED a reason to party (or to get drunk, because it seems that that's what partying is all about according to the youth), which is very sad. I don't need reasons, I just do whatever I like when I feel like it.
I hope you don't think that I'm one of those new paganists or something like that, because I'm certainly not. I just think people should be more aware of the past and their ancestors.

well talking about ancient rites, today is Dia de todos los Santos (All Saint's Day) and tomorrow is Día de los Muertos (Day of the Deads) here, so many ppl are keeping alive this tradition including the one which the catholic church impossed here, so it's not only the halloween costumes party which is commemorated in my place but yes it's more about youngs partying and getting drunk and less of profit and sales stuff, is not that big thing here.

actually on Oct 28th a neighbor celebrates her b-day and usually offers a party, sometimes she asks to the ppl to wear costumes, not only halloween costumes, but in general, she used to like that way, but after her mom died a few years ago also on Oct 27th all of that is almost finished. no more parties no more costumes either.
